Please Note:
Can I just drop in to try a class?
Before starting pregnancy or post-natal yoga we need to know that it is safe for you to do so. Once you have contacted us to make sure that there is a place for you in one of our classes you will have to complete a registration form. This you can do online here (or we can post a form if preferred). You will also have to confirm that you have the permission of your midwife or doctor.
How much does the class cost?
Each session lasts one hour and costs £8.00 more details
I have never done yoga before. Does this matter?
Not at all. You will be guided every step of the way in a relaxed and supportive environment. Inflexible beginners welcome!
Now that I am pregnant can I just carry on with the yoga that I am doing already?
Unfortunately not. Yoga should not be practised at all during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. Thereafter your yoga should be guided by a properly qualified pre-natal yoga teacher. Many of the poses that you may have taken for granted before will not be suitable during your pregnancy. There are also certain poses and breathing exercises which are particularly beneficial during pregnancy that you may not have practised before.
Should I be practising yoga as it is my first pregnancy?
Yes absolutely. It will be of benefit to you in so many ways.
What should I wear?
Any comfortable and unrestrictive clothing, such as you might wear for normal fitness activities, would be suitable. Bare feet are necessary for the class.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
A proper non-slip yoga mat is essential as well as a blanket for the final relaxation. However both these are provided at no extra cost should you decide not to bring your own.
What type of yoga do you teach?
There are now several schools of yoga being practised. I teach Hatha Yoga which is the oldest and most traditional form. It focuses on postures (asanas), proper breathing and relaxation.
When should I stop pre-natal yoga?
You can continue with yoga for as long as you feel comfortable and as long as your qualified medical professional considers it appropriate. This can mean right up to the birth.
How soon can I start post-natal yoga?
This will depend on the nature of the birth, but not before the post-birth six week checkup.
When can I transfer from post-natal to a regular yoga class?
As a general guideline, about four months after the birth you should be ready to move into a gentle regular class. Of course this should be after consultation with your doctor and then the yoga teacher. For details of my regular yoga classes click here (external link).
Are there any videos or dvd's that you would recommend so that I can practise yoga between classes?
I would not recommend any unguided pre-natal or post-natal yoga. Although these dvd's may be produced by respected yoga professionals they are not there in person to ensure the safety of you and your baby.
